The 80s was an era undoubtedly filled with angsts fueled movies to channel your inner teen but no does it better that Micheal Lehrnmanns 1989 classic: Heathers. Heathers follows Veronica (Winona Ryder) whos wildly uninterested in her group of friends, “The Heathers” as she meets a new misanthropic loner, JD (Christian Slater).

Heathers starts with Veronica resenting a game of crochet and quickly spirals into a rollercoaster of madness, romance , and murder with JD at the center of it all. Their explosive Bonnie and Clyde like relationship makes for an odd yet relatable pair. It’s this relatability is what makes the movie so great. Even though it takes teen movie tropes to the extreme (suicidal loner boy, bitchy popular girls, idiotic jocks etc) , there’s something about Veronicas angsty monologues that reasonate with me. Almost as if she’s a friend saying “you think yoru life is fucked? Well look at mine.” Most classic eighties movies like pretty in pink and breakfast club, while they’re amazing movies in and of themselves, they feel more like conversations about adolescence. Heathers on the other hand is a show of how adolescence feels: a horrific rollercoaster with no end, so you might as well enjoy the ride.
